how to know if you need a lactation consultation
Looking back at the early weeks of my own breastfeeding journey, there were SO many signs that I needed more help. I struggled for THREE months until I got the right support, because I wasn’t sure whether a lactation consultation could actually help me. By that point, my nipples were damaged, my mental health was a wreck, and I’d been in pain for months.
My goal is to help you get support as soon as you need it, so you don’t have to wait until things get really bad. I put together this list of signs that you need feeding support to help you check for yourself whether a lactation consultation could be right for you.
Signs to seek feeding support
Baby won’t latch or takes a long time to latch
Feeding is painful or uncomfortable
Nipple and/or breast pain after feeds or in between feeds
Nipple looks pinched, creased, like the slanted tip of a lipstick, or turns white after feeds
Sore, cracked, irritated, itchy or bruised nipples
Pumping and/or bottle feeding
Baby is combo fed (breastmilk + formula)
Engorgement, blocked ducts, or mastitis
Slow weight gain in baby or excessive weight loss after birth
Excessive crying (for baby or yourself!)
Symptoms of reflux or colic
Feeling like feeding is emotionally challenging
Extreme fatigue and/or sleep deprivation

The 3 most common breastfeeding problems I see in Cayman
1️⃣ Low milk supply
There’s usually a whole combination of factors that have led to low milk supply. What I wish more moms knew is that the sooner you seek support, the more likely it is that we’ll be able to get your supply up.
2️⃣ Baby won’t latch
One of my favorite parts about my job is the feeling of getting a baby to latch who has previously struggled with latching (or maybe has never even latched before!) There’s no better feeling than seeing the surprise, joy, and relief on mum’s face 🥰 Not every case is so simple, but we always start by helping babies to use their instincts. Often babies have never had the opportunity to use their natural feeding reflexes!
3️⃣ Painful feeding
Whether the pain is felt only during a feed, or lasts long after, it’s often one of the clearest signs that something is not quite right with the latch. My job is not just to tell you to “get a deeper latch” - it’s to assess WHY the latch wasn’t deep enough to begin with. Whether it’s simply a quick fix of technique & positioning, or there’s something more going on, we’ll work together to create a plan. Painful feeding is NOT something to try and figure out alone - it’s mentally exhausting, and can lead to slow weight gain in baby and low milk supply down the line if it’s due to a shallow latch that’s preventing effective feeding.
What I wish more new moms knew about breastfeeding in Cayman
Unfortunately, the level of lactation support you’d get in other countries just isn’t standard in Cayman. I know all too well how sparse and unpredictable breastfeeding support can be for new moms in Cayman. This means that small issues aren’t flagged in the early days, leading to bigger challenges down the line.
A shallow latch or improperly sized pump flange can be a minor fix. But without the right support, they can lead to nipple damage, mastitis, and even low milk supply - problems that are easily prevented with a trained eye taking a peek early enough.
Far too often, I see moms 1-2 months postpartum with major problems which could have easily been avoided with some small adjustments if they’d had more support in the early days. The sooner you seek support the better!
